Is Meebox Free?

  • Most of Meebox's features are free to use, but there are some limitations
  • To survive (yes, it's for survival), Meebox has some premium features, such as unlimited imports of images, videos, and files, unlimited password storage, and a feature called Blackbox to prevent prying eyes from accessing your privacy
  • The app is ad-free (since premium features are charged for, there won't be any ads)

For specific feature limitations, please see Getting Started

How Is My Data Stored?

All data saved by users in this app is encrypted using the XSalsa20 encryption algorithm and stored locally (even thumbnails of images and videos are encrypted).

For text-based data such as memos, passwords, and user configuration information, encrypted databases are used for storage.

For larger files, the files are split and encrypted separately, and each split file is encrypted with a different key.

Why Can't Original Files Be Automatically Deleted After Importing Data?

Firstly, it needs to be clarified:

This app will not delete any original files that users have imported.

Therefore, after importing data, if users want to delete the original files, they need to do so manually.

With Android's increasingly strict requirements for app permissions, it has become more and more difficult for apps to operate on files outside their private storage. Therefore, we have chosen the approach of using the least permissions, which is also the simplest approach:

When storing encrypted files, the app will make a copy of the files selected by the user in the app's private area, encrypt the copied files, and then delete the copied files.

The advantage of this approach is that it does not affect the user's original files in any way. The disadvantage is that it takes time to copy multiple files or large files at once. When the user's storage space is not sufficient, selecting multiple files at once may cause insufficient memory.

Another reason for letting users delete files themselves is that changes made by various phone manufacturers to the system have made it increasingly difficult to delete files in a public area. For example, on Huawei phones, after deleting a file, the system will pop up a prompt to inform the user which app deleted the file and whether to confirm the deletion. There is also a recycle bin feature. Even if the app helps the user delete it, it may not be completely removed. It's better to give users the choice.

Will My Data Be Uploaded Online?

Meebox will not upload any user-imported data to the internet. All data is stored locally and encrypted.

Meebox can also run in offline mode. Users can view Meebox's data consumption in their phone's system settings and even disable the app from using WLAN and mobile data. However, this requires users to have registered or logged in with guest mode.

To access the system settings, open the system settings -> search for "data management" in the search box, or search for "network management" -> find the settings for app data or network in the search results. Using the search function is much more efficient than searching through the settings one by one.

Will Data Be Deleted After Uninstalling the App?

After uninstalling Meebox, all imported data will be deleted. Before uninstalling, please make sure to export important data to avoid unnecessary loss!

This behavior is determined by the Android system. Because Meebox does not have permission to write to the sdcard public area, all data is stored in the app's private storage area, and data in this area will be deleted along with the app.

Will Data Be Deleted After Logging Out?

After logging out, all imported data will be deleted, and the account information stored on the server will also be deleted. Please proceed with caution!

I Forgot My Master Password, How Can I Reset It?

If you forget your master password and have set up a password protection question, you can reset your master password through the password protection question. If you have not set up a password protection question, you can reset your master password using the master key generated during registration.

The prerequisite for using the key to reset the master password is to enable the option "Allow using key to reset master password."

You can copy or screenshot the key on the "My -> Settings -> View Key" page and save it to another medium.

The key is an important credential for resetting the master password, so please keep it safe and avoid disclosing it to others to ensure the security of your account.
